Usage of Dicyclopentadiene

Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) is a reactive alicyclic monomer. It is mainly used for EPDM rubber, unsaturated polyester resin, hydrocarbon resin, pDCPD RIM composite parts, and fine chemical intermediates for agrochemicals, coatings and adhesives.

1. EPDM Rubber Industry
It serves as the third diene monomer for EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) rubber, introducing double bonds for vulcanization. It improves heat resistance, ozone resistance and aging performance for automotive seals, wire & cable insulation, roofing waterproof membranes.

2. Unsaturated Polyester Resins (UPR)
Modifier for unsaturated polyester resins. DCPD-modified UPR features low shrinkage, fast curing, good water & chemical resistance, commonly used in fiberglass composites, boats, construction and corrosion-resistant equipment.

3. Hydrocarbon Resins
Raw material for manufacturing aliphatic hydrocarbon resins and cycloaliphatic resins. These resins are applied in hot-melt adhesives, printing inks, coatings and pressure-sensitive adhesives.

4. pDCPD / RIM Reaction Injection Molding
Producing polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) via ROMP reaction. Used for high-impact structural parts by RIM technology: heavy truck body panels, agricultural machinery hoods, construction equipment housings and marine components.

5. Coatings, Inks & Adhesives
Used to modify drying oils (tung oil, linseed oil) to accelerate drying rate and enhance water/alkali resistance for paints, varnishes and printing inks.
